John Hewitt

(28 October 1907-22 June 1987)

John Harold Hewitt  was the most significant Ulster poet to emerge before the Sixties generation of Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon and Michael Longley. Hehad an active political life and was an atheist.

His life and work are celebrated in two prominent ways – the annual John Hewitt International Summer School – and the ‘John Hewitt Bar and Restaurant’, Belfast.

stone cairn was erected near Cushendall, County Atrim in memory of Hewitt in 1989.
