The John Hewitt, Belfast

The ‘John Hewitt Bar and Restaurant’ is named after the poet, atheist and Freeman of Belfast John Hewitt.

The bar, opened in1999, is named after him because in1983 he officially opened The Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre, who own the establishment. The Resource Centre’s managers had always relied on grants to fund its work, when in the mid ninties, they came up with the idea of generating some of their own funds by going into business.

The bar  is situated on Belfast’s Donegall Street in the city’s Cathedral Quarter.

It is a popular meeting place for local writers, musicians, journalists and artists. Both the Belfast Festival at Queens and the Belfast Film Festival use the venue to stage events.
